Back in January I got an email telling me all about a brand new photography conference that was taking place in Utah called Clickaway. There is nothing like it in the UK as it’s specifically for female lifestyle photographers. I thought about how amazing it would be to go but just didn’t think it was possible. There are no direct flights from the UK to Salt Lake City so the journey was over 20 hours and I just didn’t think I could leave my boys for that long.
But then I started talking to my friend Eddie about it (who is a fellow photographer) and we realised it was something we really wanted to do. Our husbands were really supportive and so we took the plunge and booked it!
And then I very nearly cancelled the trip when we didn’t know what was happening with our house move, but I’m so pleased I didn’t. We had such a great time and I’ve come home feeling inspired and motivated. I think it’s so important that no matter what stage you’re at with your photography, that you carry on learning. I’ve photographed hundreds of families over the 6 years I’ve been in business, but it’s always great to take a step back and learn from other photographers and pick up new techniques.
I thought you might want to see a few of the photos from the trip, so grab a cuppa and have a nosy!
On top of all of the classes and workshops each day, there was an area in the convention centre called ‘The Hub’ where they had lots of exhibitor stands. We loved having a play with all of the packaging on the Design Aglow stand.
And I felt very inspired looking at all of the winning images from the ‘Voice’ competition. Here are a few of my favourites…
So much talent on show!
And it was great to chat to one of my photographer crushes Sue Bryce. She does glamour/beauty photography so very different from my child & family photography, but I love her business ethos and the way she inspires women to follow their passion. I didn’t get a selfie with her as she seemed to have people coming up to her every minute asking for one, so instead I just photographed her slyly in the ‘meet the speaker’ talk!
I did lots of shooting workshops with photographers such as Meg Bitton, Summer Murdock & Marissa Gifford. It was really interesting to see the differences between how photographers shoot and interact with the people they are shooting. And the different ways they all run their businesses.
Salt Lake City was a dream to shoot in. Big wide pavements with no-one on them, and beautiful light too! I don’t shoot in urban locations often but if I lived somewhere like this I would be tempted to shoot there constantly!
Included in the convention ticket was a cocktail party and an outdoor concert which were both great fun. I left my camera at home in the evenings but here is us making some friends at the cocktail party. Thanks Photobooth Supply Co for the photos! (that’s me 2nd from the right in case case you can’t tell!)
Yes that’s me in the middle photo above….we had no idea we were so colour co-ordinated on our bike trip until we saw the photos!
And then on the last day Clickaway put on an excursion to Saltair….I have seen this place for years in other photographers’ images and have always dreamed of shooting there myself. Yes it was smelly and boggy, but wow, so beautiful!
So overall it was a great adventure. I was really nervous about leaving my boys & husband but I realised that they can cope just fine without me! And I’ve come home feeling energised and inspired about my photography and my business. So thank goodness we took the plunge and did it! I hope you enjoyed having a little nosy at the photos from our trip!
